Yoga practitioners offer exercise programs for individuals to work on their strength, flexibility, mindfulness, and balance. They pronounce Sanskrit easily. We are all left only knowing or understanding a few Asana (pose) words like “cat cow” and “downward dog”.

To fully understand the path of a Yogi, I must also acknowledge that some use Yoga for relief and exercise. I honor the sacred path of the lotus flower (a yogi). It is a journey and beautiful practice that deserves the utmost respect.

For those that are given practical exercise and healing through their hard work, continue your journey. Yoga benefits stress reduction, aids in physical performance or general well-being. Nervous system and physiological benefits are evident. It is a workout practice that can be incorporated with other fitness regimens like running, biking, hiking, swimming, and more.

The “exercise only” perspective certainly yields valuable physical and mental health benefits, it’s important to recognize that it represents only a fraction of the profound, multi-dimensional practice that yoga truly is.

  1. Focus on Physical Benefits:
    • Strength: They see yoga as a way to build muscle tone and endurance, often through holding challenging poses or flowing sequences.
    • Flexibility: This is often the primary reason people start yoga from an exercise perspective. They want to increase their range of motion and reduce stiffness.
    • Balance: They recognize yoga’s ability to improve both static and dynamic balance, which is beneficial for overall physical control and injury prevention.
    • Weight Management/Calorie Burn: While some yoga styles are more effective for this than others, those focused on exercise might choose vigorous styles like Vinyasa or Power Yoga for their cardiovascular benefits and calorie expenditure.
    • Core Strength: Many yoga poses engage the core muscles, which is seen as a major benefit for overall stability and posture.
  2. Focus on Client’s Emotional Well-Being
    • Emotion Chart: The emotion chart below is some of the many reasons we seek Yoga for self-care.
